The Message: Job: Led by Suffering to the Heart of God
Published in Hardcover by Navpress (March, 1996)
Author: Eugene H. Peterson
Average review score:

Is there a God, and why does he allow suffering?
I am buying more copies as gifts for others! This book is a great resource for explaining how God and human suffering can coexist --- something everyone wonders about. God uses suffering to draw us to him, to focus on him when life doesn't make sense. That's when he gets our attention, as the book of Job illustrates. The translation is extremely good at expressing the original Hebrew in today's colloquialisms. Here's an example that stuck with me (which I am writing from memory as I have already given my copy to a friend!): Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one! (Job 14-NIV) Peterson translates it something like: How can I pull myself up by my bootstraps when I don't even have any boots? I think you get the gist...Peterson brings the text alive! I highly recommend this book

The Message: The Old Testament History Books in Contemporary Language
Published in Hardcover by Navpress (July, 2002)
Author: Eugene H. Peterson
Average review score:

Excellent rendition of Old Testament history books!
I bought this at a Border's store earlier this year. I now have the entire Bible in Eugene Peterson's Message translation. This one merely completes the set for me.
I really enjoyed reading this one in my daily Bible reading. I especially enjoyed reading about the ladies of the O.T., namely Ruth & Ester. Those 2 are perhaps my 2 favorite female characters in all of the Bible.
Many people are often intimidated by much of the O.T. of the Bible. They find it too weighty or too theological for the average lay person to understand. Thanks to Eugene Peterson, it's now understandable to everyone. And, like his other Message Bible translations, he has included summaries at the start of each book. So, not only is the book in modern English, but we get a good idea of what eaqch book is about and h0ow it applies to us today.
Because of Brother Peterson's work, all of us can now read an enjoy the O.T. and get a modern day application for our lives. Amen to Brother Eugene Peterson!

I was not able to review this book because it is not available. However, it is such a good book that the anticipation of its arrival is better than Waiting for Godot.

The Mid-Atlantic States: New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey (The Smithsonian Guides to Natural America)
Published in Paperback by Smithsonian Books (December, 1996)
Authors: Eugene Walter and Jonathan Wallen
Average review score:

New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania's natural beauty.
The Smithsonian Natural Guides are my new bible for travel. Who really cares about all those motel & restaurant guides w/cheesy attractions anyhow? These guides bring to life what kind of America lies behind (and often even above) the tourist traps.

In the guide to New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania's natural places, Eugene Walter takes the reader to the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, the Valley & Ridge Province, the Pine Barrens and other lesser known reserves in an often poetical manner, making it for once a travel guide that's a page-turner! His descriptions of certain places follow streams down their courses, allowing full visualization as well as a desire to get in the car and go there!

Military Handguns of France, 1858-1958
Published in Paperback by Excalibur Publications (March, 1993)
Author: Eugene Medlin
Average review score:

Military Handguns of France - An Outstanding Source
"Military Handguns of France" is an excellent source for detailed information and pitures not only of the handguns themselves, but also their accessories. This book is definitely targeted at individuals who have a desire to understand the history of French revolvers and pistols beginning with the pinfire revolver of 1858 thru the model 1950 semiautomatic pistol.

The history behind the development and selection of the pistols is provided along with many historical pictures of the servicemen who carried them. Marking, dating, and production details are provided along with dimensions for the arms and catridges themselves.

While the subject matter may appeal to a select audience, I can only say, "I wish I had a book of this quality and price for the other major nations that produced military pistols during this era."

If you have any interest in this subject at all you will not be disappointed in this book. If you don't have any interest in this subject and don't wish to have, beware of this book! It's infectious.

Well Worth Reading!
I had read some of Mr. Walter's whimsical poetry some years back, but until I discovered this collection, I never knew just how talented and versatile the man truly was! This was an incredible collection of essays, stories, and everyday remembrances written by an amazingly talented and diverse group of writers such as Pat Conroy, Charles McNair, and British author Virginia Adair. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

My Night With Federico Garcia Lorca =Mi Noche Con Federico Garcia Lorca: Mi Noche Con Federico Garcia Lorca
Published in Paperback by Painted Leaf Pr (March, 1997)
Authors: Jaime Manrique, Edith Grossman, Eugene Richie, and Patrick Kirchner
Average review score:

Passionate, sensuous poetry
"My Night With Federico Garcia Lorca"/"Mi Noche con Federico Garcia Lorca" is a bilingual edition of poetry by Jaime Manrique, the versatile and talented author who was born in Colombia. Manrique's Spanish poems have been translated into an engaging free verse by Edith Grossman and Eugene Richie. Each two-page spread contains Manrique's Spanish originals on the even-numbered page, with the English version on the odd-numbered page.

Manrique writes about a number of subjects: family, childhood, nature, art, Latin American life, and gay love. His poetry is direct and passionate, and is marked by sensuous imagery. Many of the poems seem to be autobiographical in nature.

There are many standout poems in this excellent collection. One of my favorites is his beautiful "Ode to Hummingbird," which contains these memorable lines: "Others think I'm looking into infinite green; / a hummingbird is only visible to the eyes of love." The poem "Toadstools" has a wildly mystical flavor. Another poetic triumph is the title poem, a gentle narrative in which an elderly gay man remembers his night of passion with Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca.

Much of this book complements Manrique's excellent prose work "Eminent Maricones: Arenas, Lorca, Puig, and Me." That volume is a blend of autobiography and literary biography, and readers who enjoy "My Night.../Mi Noche..." will probably like "Eminent Maricones" too.

I highly recommend "My Night.../Mi Noche...". If you are interested in Latino/Hispanic studies, gay literature, or contemporary poetry, spend your own night of passion with Jaime Manrique.
